Thailand Aims to Become Asean’s Fashion Wholesale Center

Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok is aiming to become the clothing manufacturer center for the ASEAN region.

Plans…

Thailand’s Department of Industrial Promotion will begin to work on improving the capacity of the existing four fashion wholesale markets in Bangkok next year, according to National News Bureau of Thailand.

Small and medium businesses in the four markets – Chatuchak, Bobae, Pratunam and Sampheng – would be the focus of the department’s trade initiative, director of the New Entrepreneurs Creation division of the department reported.

Facts…

Thailand is already a major center for clothing items and clothing manufacturers, and if the four markets are synergized, garment exports from the country would surge to at least 24 billion baht per annum, the chairman of Bobae Market’s export service center, said.

The Philippines is currently the top importer of apparel wholesale from Thailand, followed by Malaysia.

ASEAN…

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which would come into effect from 2015, would benefit the Thai apparel wholesale, rather than giving rise to stiff competition for them, according to Reno (Thailand) Co, manufacturer of fashion apparel.

Thai garment manufacturers and brands are quite good at brand-building and marketing, when compared with their Asean counterparts. Hence they are not much bothered about survival of Thai brands in Asean markets or entry of Asean brands in domestic markets. The economic integration in the ASEAN community is seen as an expansion of market and opportunity.

Furthermore, Thailand clothing manufacturers have already outlived long years of political instability and tough competition from international brands.
